Marka lies on the southern coast of Somalia, south of Mogadishu. On a map the town is a small, dense cluster of buildings against the shoreline, with a long straight coast stretching away in both directions. Just inland, sand dunes separate the sea from the farmland of the Shabeelle valley.
It is one of the historic ports of the Benadir coast, a region where Indian Ocean trade linked Somalia with Arabia, Persia and India for centuries. The old quarter has narrow lanes and stone houses close to the water. Marka is the administrative centre of the Lower Shabeelle region.
