Matiari lies in Sindh on the fertile plain east of the Indus River, between Hyderabad and Hala. It is the headquarters of Matiari District. From above, the landscape is almost entirely flat. Canals, field boundaries and roads divide the country into long rectangles, and the town forms a denser knot where these lines meet.
The area has long been known for its agriculture and for its link to the Sufi traditions of Sindh. The national highway running north from Hyderabad passes close by and carries much of the traffic between the province's cities.
