Mauldin is in Greenville County in South Carolina's Upstate, just southeast of Greenville. From above, it is clearly a modern suburb. Curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs fill the land between a few main roads, and an interstate spur runs through the city. There is little of a traditional grid, just neighbourhoods connected by arterials.
The city belongs to the Golden Strip, the chain of communities along the corridor south of Greenville that grew quickly in the late twentieth century. Parks, schools and sports fields appear as open patches among the subdivisions and give the map a pattern of green gaps between housing.
