Mdantsane Map Poster
Mdantsane lies roughly twenty kilometres northwest of central East London in the Eastern Cape, within the Buffalo City metropolitan area. It was built from the early 1960s as a planned township, and the map reflects that origin: the settlement is divided into numbered units, each a separate cluster of streets and houses spread across rolling hills and valleys.
It is often described as one of the largest townships in South Africa, and its extent on the map shows why. Neighbourhoods follow ridges and slopes, connected by a few main roads, with streams and open ground between units. The N2 passes along its edge, linking the area with East London toward the coast and Qonce, formerly King William's Town, inland.
