Meybod lies in Yazd Province in central Iran, on the dry plateau north-west of the city of Yazd. It is one of the oldest settlements in the region, and its historic core is built largely of mud brick, with domes, wind catchers and narrow lanes shaded by high walls.
At the centre stands Narin Castle, a large earthen fortress on a mound that predates the Islamic era. Around it, the old town spreads in a dense, irregular pattern. Meybod is also known for its caravanserai, its dovecote tower and a traditional ice house, and for its long tradition of pottery.
