Modakeke sits immediately beside Ile-Ife, in Osun State in south-western Nigeria, and on a map the two towns run into each other with little open space between them. The town was founded in the nineteenth century by people who settled here during a period of upheaval in the Oyo region, and its history is closely bound to that of its larger neighbour.
