Modimolle sits in Limpopo province at the edge of the Waterberg region. Its town centre is laid out in a regular grid of blocks, with wider suburbs and smallholdings around it. Just outside town, Modimolle Mountain rises on its own from the flat surroundings, and the Nyl River and its floodplain cross the landscape nearby.
The town was long known as Nylstroom. The name comes from nineteenth-century Voortrekkers who, finding a river flowing north, believed they had reached the headwaters of the Nile. The Nylsvley floodplain further along the river is known for its birdlife when the area floods.
