Monteiro lies in the Cariri region of Paraíba, in the semi-arid interior of north-eastern Brazil, close to the border with Pernambuco. The town forms a compact grid of streets and squares on higher ground. It is surrounded by dry, rolling countryside, where small dams and reservoirs show up as scattered patches of water.
Water is the central story of this region. Monteiro became widely known as the point where the eastern branch of the São Francisco river transposition project delivered water into the Paraíba river basin, a milestone for a region long shaped by drought.
