Morvi, also written Morbi, lies in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat on the banks of the Machchhu River. On a map the river runs north through the city, and the old town sits along its bank, with a denser pattern of lanes and bazaars around the historic centre.
Beyond the older quarters, newer roads extend outward, especially along the main highways. Large industrial areas surround the city, and their broad plots and straight roads contrast clearly with the tighter streets near the river. The flat surrounding land gives the map an open, spacious frame.
Morvi was the capital of a princely state, and its rulers built palaces including the Mani Mandir and the Art Deco style New Palace.
