Mponela is a town in Dowa District in Malawi's Central Region, north of the capital, Lilongwe. It sits on the M1, the country's main north–south road. On a map, the highway is the town's spine: a strong line running through the centre, with market areas and shops along it and residential streets spreading out on either side.
The surrounding landscape is the central plateau, largely given over to farming. Beyond the edges of town, the map shows fields, scattered homesteads and smaller roads leading to nearby villages.
