Mutum lies in the east of Minas Gerais, close to the state line with Espírito Santo, in a region of steep ridges and narrow valleys. From above, the town is shaped less by a plan than by topography. Streets run along the valley floor and then fan up the slopes in short, curving branches.
The centre forms a compact grid around the main square and church, the usual heart of a Minas town, but the grid lasts only a few blocks before the hills take over. Streams and small green gaps separate the neighbourhoods. A few roads leave town through the valleys, bending with them toward neighbouring municipalities and farmland.
Mutum is an agricultural municipality, and much of the surrounding land is farms and pasture. It shares its name with the curassow, a large forest bird of Brazil.
