Nagano sits in a broad basin surrounded by mountains, close to where the Sai River flows into the Chikuma. On the map the city lies across flat land between these rivers, with a regular pattern of streets that grows denser toward the north, where the ground begins to rise.
At the top of the main approach stands Zenkō-ji, a Buddhist temple founded more than thirteen centuries ago, and the town grew largely as a temple settlement around it. Nagano gained international recognition as host of the 1998 Winter Olympics, and today the Hokuriku Shinkansen connects it directly with Tokyo.

The Sai and Chikuma rivers meet on the eastern side of the city. Their wide, braided channels form an open pale area against the dense urban blocks.
