Nawá lies on the Hauran plain in southern Syria, a broad volcanic plateau of dark basalt soil. The land is open and gently rolling, and from above the town appears as a compact cluster of streets with roads leading out across farmland toward neighbouring towns.
Nawá is an ancient settlement, and it is known as the birthplace of the thirteenth-century scholar Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi, whose works on hadith and law remain widely read across the Muslim world. His name, al-Nawawi, comes from the town itself.
