Nueva Rosita is the main town of the municipality of San Juan de Sabinas, in the Región Carbonífera of northern Coahuila, Mexico's principal coal-producing area. The town grew around mining and the railway, and its plan shows it: straight streets laid out in regular blocks, industrial sites at the edges, and rail lines running out into the landscape beyond.
The town holds a notable place in Mexican labour history. In 1950 and 1951 miners from Nueva Rosita and neighbouring towns went on strike, and in early 1951 thousands set out on foot for Mexico City in what became known as the Caravana del Hambre, the hunger march. The episode remains a reference point for the country's union movement.
