Odendaalsrus lies on the flat highveld of the northern Free State, a few kilometres north of Welkom. Its map shows a regular town centre of straight streets, separate residential areas spread around it and, in the surrounding land, the traces of mining: tailings, shafts and service roads laid across open grassland dotted with shallow pans.
The town began as a small farming settlement early in the twentieth century, but its character changed after gold was found nearby in the 1940s, a discovery that helped open the Free State goldfields. Mining brought rapid growth to Odendaalsrus and led to the founding of Welkom, which became the centre of the region.
