Omaha rises from the west bank of the Missouri River, across from Council Bluffs, Iowa. From above, the river forms the city's eastern edge, and a very regular grid extends west for miles across rolling land. Dodge Street is the main east–west axis and runs from downtown to the far western suburbs. Along its route, the neighbourhoods get newer and the blocks get larger.
The river's shifting course left a notable detail on the map. Carter Lake, a small Iowa town, sits on the Nebraska side of the river. It was cut off when the Missouri changed course in the nineteenth century, and a crescent-shaped lake marks the old bend. Downtown, the brick streets of the Old Market lie near the river, and a pedestrian bridge crosses to Iowa.
