Ōnojō Map Poster
Ōnojō lies just south of Fukuoka, in the narrow corridor of low ground between Hakata Bay and the Dazaifu area. The city is densely built, with rail lines and roads running north to south through the corridor. On the map, housing fills almost every level space, stopping only where the hills rise on its eastern side.
The city's name refers to Ōno Castle, a mountain fortress built in the 660s on the hill now called Shiōjiyama, as part of Japan's defences after the Battle of Baekgang. Nearby, the Mizuki, a long earthen barrier of the same period, crosses the valley. Its line through the neighbourhoods is one of the most unusual features of any Ōnojō map poster.
Rail lines and main roads connect the city with Fukuoka and Dazaifu, and small rivers flow north toward Hakata Bay. The mix of ancient defensive lines and a modern commuter-town street pattern gives Ōnojō a map that rewards a closer look.
