Orós Map Poster
Orós is a municipality in the interior of Ceará, in north-eastern Brazil, within the semi-arid sertão. Its map is dominated by water in a dry landscape: the Açude Orós, a large reservoir formed by damming the Jaguaribe River, spreads its many-armed shoreline across the terrain near the town.
The town itself is compact, with a regular grid of streets and a central square, and roads leading out toward other towns in the region. The Orós dam was a major infrastructure project, and its construction was marked by a notable failure in 1960 when floodwaters overtopped the unfinished structure. Completed afterwards, the reservoir has become essential for water supply and irrigation in the Jaguaribe valley.
