Kaarta
Pakpattan lies in southeastern Punjab, not far from the Sutlej river, on a flat plain crossed by irrigation canals. The town's older part occupies raised ground, and from above it appears as a tight cluster of narrow lanes. Newer neighbourhoods extend along the main roads, and beyond them fields and canals stretch across the landscape in long, straight lines.
Pakpattan is one of the most important Sufi centres in South Asia, home to the shrine of Baba Fariduddin Ganjshakar, the thirteenth-century saint known as Baba Farid, whose verses are also included in the Sikh scripture. The town was historically known as Ajodhan and stood at an important crossing of the Sutlej. Pilgrims visit the shrine throughout the year, especially during the annual urs.
A Pakpattan map poster shows this layered history in plain line work. The dense old town, the roads fanning outward and the straight canals and fields around it fit into one calm composition, with the shrine area at the heart of the older streets.
The historic centre sits on raised ground and forms a dense, irregular network of lanes around the shrine, clearly distinct from the newer districts around it.
Irrigation canals cross the surrounding plain in long straight lines, giving the edges of the poster a clear geometric rhythm against the organic old town.
Roads lead out of the town toward Sahiwal and other centres of the district, connecting the shrine town with the wider Punjab landscape.
