Palmela is a town in Setúbal district in Portugal, south of Lisbon across the Tagus. It is built on a hill with a castle at the top. The Castle of Palmela was once the seat of the Order of Santiago, and today it houses a pousada. The old town climbs toward it in winding streets.
From the castle, the land falls away toward the Serra da Arrábida, the Sado estuary and plains covered with vineyards. Palmela is known for its wine, including the Moscatel de Setúbal and wines under the Palmela designation. The surrounding countryside is a patchwork of vines, orchards and farm roads.
