Palwal lies south of Delhi in Haryana, on the historic route toward Mathura and Agra. The national highway and the main railway line run through it in parallel, north to south, and the town has grown around both. The older centre forms a dense knot near the station, and newer sectors and colonies extend along the highway in more regular blocks.
The town has a place in Indian history. In April 1919, Mahatma Gandhi was arrested at Palwal railway station on his way to Punjab, an event connected to the protests against the Rowlatt Act. Today Palwal is a district headquarters and increasingly part of the wider National Capital Region.
