Parambu is a town in the interior of Ceará, in the semi-arid backlands known as the sertão, toward the border with Piauí. Its map is modest: a compact grid of streets around the centre, a church square and a few roads leading out into open country, where the network quickly gives way to scattered farms and tracks.
The surrounding landscape is shaped by long dry seasons and short periods of rain. Streams and riverbeds that fill only in the wet months appear on the map as thin lines winding across the terrain, and small reservoirs dot the countryside, reflecting the importance of stored water in this part of northeastern Brazil.
