Pátapo lies in the Lambayeque region of northern Peru, inland from Chiclayo on the broad coastal plain. The land here is desert by nature, made green by irrigation drawn from rivers coming down from the Andes. From above, the town is a compact grid surrounded by large, regular fields, with canals and farm tracks running between them in straight lines.
Sugarcane has long been the defining crop of this part of Lambayeque, and Pátapo grew as one of the settlements tied to it. The rhythm of planting, harvest and processing shaped the town and its neighbours. Beyond the fields, dry hills and open desert mark the limits of the irrigated land, a boundary that is easy to feel when travelling through.

Canals run across the plain, carrying water to the fields. On the map they appear as thin, steady lines that tie the town to the farmland around it.
Field roads
Straight tracks divide the cultivated land into large plots. Where irrigation ends, the network thins out abruptly, giving the composition a clear outer edge.
