Pendang lies in the state of Kedah in northern Peninsular Malaysia, in the middle of a flat farming plain given over mostly to rice. From above, the landscape is strikingly regular. Paddy fields are divided by irrigation canals and drainage channels, straight roads cross the plain, and small villages line them. The town itself is a compact cluster where these roads meet.
Kedah is often called the rice bowl of Malaysia, and Pendang is typical of the district towns that serve this landscape, providing markets, schools and government offices for the villages around it.
