Pentecoste is a municipality in the interior of Ceará, in north-eastern Brazil, inland from Fortaleza in the semi-arid country known as the sertão. The town lies along the Curu River. On a map its compact centre of streets and squares sits close to the river's course, with roads heading out across open land.
The area's defining feature is water held back in a dry climate. The Pereira de Miranda reservoir, built on the Curu, spreads beside the town with an irregular shoreline that follows the valleys it flooded. From above it reads as a large, branching shape, far bigger than the town itself.
