Petershagen lies in the far northeast of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the Minden-Lübbecke district, where the Weser leaves the hills behind and winds across open lowland. The municipality is large and loosely knit. It is a string of villages on both banks of the river rather than one dense centre, so fields, lanes and water dominate the map.
The historic core sits beside the Weser, where the prince-bishops of Minden once kept a residence, and the castle still stands by the river. Around it the old town is small and compact.
