From above, the town is a compact grid of streets laid out on uneven ground, with a central area of denser blocks and newer neighbourhoods extending outward along the roads that lead to other towns in the sertão.
The surrounding landscape is dry for much of the year, covered in caatinga scrub and crossed by seasonal streams and small reservoirs. On the map, these reservoirs, known locally as açudes, appear as irregular pale shapes, while dirt roads and field boundaries form a faint web around the town. In places the terrain rises into rocky hills.
