Pivijay lies in the flat lowlands of Magdalena Department in northern Colombia, a region of pastures, seasonal wetlands and slow waterways between the Magdalena River and the Sierra Nevada. From above, the town looks like a neat block of streets laid on level ground, with farmland stretching away in every direction.
The plan is a straightforward grid of the kind found across the Colombian Caribbean. Blocks are set around a central plaza and church, and the streets widen and thin out toward the edges. Roads lead out to neighbouring towns and farms, and water channels and low wet areas in the surrounding land show up as irregular shapes.
