Plottier lies just west of the city of Neuquén, on the northern bank of the Limay River. From above, the town stretches along the main road through the valley. The river and its green floodplain run to the south, and the dry plateau rises to the north.
The town grew from farmland in the irrigated valley, which has long been known for its fruit. Over the last few decades, Plottier has become a residential town for people working in Neuquén. New neighbourhoods have spread across former plots and orchards, and many keep their long, narrow shapes.
