Puqiakeqi lies in southern Xinjiang, in the belt of oases along the edge of the Tarim Basin near Hotan. From above, the settlement sits in a green, geometric landscape: fields divided by irrigation channels, straight tree-lined roads, and clusters of houses gathered along them. Beyond the cultivated area the pattern stops abruptly where the desert begins.
Life here depends on water carried down from the Kunlun Mountains to the south, and the map reflects that.
