Qabqa is the seat of Gonghe County in Qinghai, and it sits nearly three kilometres above sea level on the broad Gonghe Basin. From above, the town looks compact against a very large, mostly empty landscape. Its streets form a fairly regular grid, and a few long roads run out across the plain.
The mountains south of Qinghai Lake rise to the north, and the basin stretches away to the south and west toward the Yellow River.
