Ranzan lies in the Hiki district of central Saitama, where the Kantō plain begins to rise towards the Chichibu hills. The Tsuki River flows through the town in wide bends, and the settled area follows the valley and the main roads. Rice fields fill the flatter ground, and wooded hills close in on several sides, so the map combines river curves with patches of field and forest.
The town's name is linked to Arashiyama in Kyoto. A bend of the river here, known as the Ranzan valley, was said to resemble that famous scenery, and the town name follows from that comparison. The ruins of Sugaya Castle, a medieval fortification, are also located in the town and are recognised as a national historic site.
