Rikuzen-Takata is a city on the Sanriku coast of Iwate Prefecture, at the head of Hirota Bay. The 2011 tsunami destroyed much of the town centre. Since then, the town has been rebuilt on ground raised well above its former level. On the map, a newly planned grid stands where the old streets used to be.
Before the disaster, the shore was lined by the Takata-matsubara, a long pine forest. Of roughly seventy thousand trees, only one pine was left standing. It became known as the miracle pine and a symbol of recovery, and it has been preserved as a memorial. A memorial park now occupies part of the former waterfront.

Rebuilt centre
After 2011 the town centre was rebuilt on raised land. It has a new, regular street layout that is clearly different from the older fishing settlements along the coast.
Memorial waterfront
Part of the former coastal strip is now a memorial park near the lone pine. On the map it is an open space between the town and the sea.
