Rizhao lies on the southern coast of Shandong, facing the Yellow Sea. Its name means roughly 'sunshine', a reference to its position on the eastern coast. On the map the city runs along the shore in a long band, and its streets are set back from a coastline of beaches, forest belts and waterfront roads.
In the south of the city is a large port with long piers and docks reaching into the sea. Its sharp geometry is one of the most striking features on the map. Further north the coast becomes softer, with beaches, lagoons and a wide green strip of coastal forest between the city and the water.
