Rota occupies a point on the northwestern shore of the Bay of Cádiz, where the Atlantic coast turns into the bay. Its old town is a tight cluster of narrow whitewashed streets near the water, grouped around the Castillo de Luna, a medieval castle that now houses the town hall. Beaches stretch away along the shore on both sides.
The most striking feature on the map, though, lies next to the town: Naval Station Rota, a Spanish base shared with the US Navy. Its long runways and wide, open areas cover a large area and contrast sharply with the dense lanes of the historic centre.
