Saint-Mandé sits just outside the Paris city limit on the east, between the 12th arrondissement and the Bois de Vincennes. It is small and very dense, with apartment blocks and tree-lined avenues packed into a compact area. On a map, it is a tight cluster of streets squeezed between the city on one side and a large area of woodland on the other.
The Bois de Vincennes curves around the south and east of the commune, and the Lac de Saint-Mandé, one of the lakes of the park, lies just outside it. The boulevard périphérique and the old city boundary mark the western edge, and the Avenue de Paris runs along the northern side towards Vincennes.
