Saonré lies on the outskirts of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso's Centre region. From above, the ground is divided into regular rectangular plots with straight tracks between them, a pattern common where land has recently been parcelled for housing. Built-up blocks sit next to empty lots, and the grid thins out gradually into fields and scattered trees.
Like many peri-urban areas around Ouagadougou, Saonré has grown as families moved out from the city in search of space and affordable plots. Earth and concrete houses, walled courtyards and unpaved streets make up most of the built fabric. The rhythms of the rainy and dry seasons still shape daily life here as much as the pull of the capital does.
