Şemdinli lies in Hakkâri province, in one of the most mountainous corners of Turkey, close to the borders with Iraq and Iran. The town follows the floor of a narrow valley, so on the map its streets form a long, slender shape between slopes that rise sharply on either side. Roads leave only where the valleys allow.
The surrounding terrain is high and rugged, with peaks that hold snow for much of the year and small villages set on terraces and ridges. The area is part of a historically Kurdish region. Its gorges, streams and orchards have long shaped how people live and move here.
