Sheno lies in the North Shewa zone of Oromia, on the high plateau northeast of Addis Ababa. From above, the town follows the main road. Its streets and buildings line the highway, and shorter side streets branch off into residential areas. All around, the highland is open and mostly treeless, divided into small cultivated plots.
The town is widely known in Ethiopia for its butter. Sheno butter is a familiar name in markets and kitchens far beyond the area, and it reflects the importance of livestock and dairy farming on these cool, high pastures. Travellers heading north on the road from the capital regularly stop here.
