Sondershausen lies in northern Thuringia, in the valley of the Wipper at the foot of the Hainleite, a long wooded ridge that closes the view to the south. For centuries it was the residence of the counts and later princes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, and on a map the old town still gathers beneath the castle, a compact cluster of streets set against the rising ground.
The castle and its park form the most prominent shape in the centre, and the market square and old lanes spread from its foot. Newer districts extend along the valley and onto the slopes, while the Wipper and the railway run through the lower town in roughly parallel lines. Beyond the edges, fields and forest fill the frame.
Sondershausen is also known for potash mining, which began here in the 1890s; one of the old mines is now a visitor mine where people descend hundreds of metres underground.
