Sunagawa lies in the Sorachi region of central Hokkaido, on the flat plain along the Ishikari River. The land was settled and laid out in the Meiji era, and it shows. Roads and field boundaries run in long, straight lines, very different from the tangled streets of older Japanese towns.
National Route 12 passes through the town. Between Bibai and Takikawa it follows a straight section of about 29 kilometres, often cited as the longest straight road in Japan. The town is also known for its confectionery shops along this road, which have earned it a reputation as a place for sweets. Coal mining once supported the wider area.
