Kaarta
Sunch’ŏn lies in South Pyongan Province, north of Pyongyang, in the valley of the Taedong River. On a map the river is the clearest feature, bending past the city while hills close in on either side. The urban area stretches along the valley floor, with roads and rail lines following the flat ground.
Large industrial sites, with their long rectangular buildings and rail sidings, sit beside residential districts of regular blocks. Main roads run the length of the valley and are crossed by shorter streets, and the rail network links the city with Pyongyang and the north. Past the edges, the street pattern quickly thins into fields and wooded slopes.
Sunch’ŏn is known in North Korea as an industrial centre, with chemical and cement production. It is also a transport junction in the province. Detailed information is hard to come by, so the map itself is often the clearest picture of the place. A Sunch’ŏn map poster shows the city as it appears from above: a river, a valley and the lines of a planned industrial town.
The Taedong curves through the valley beside the city, giving the composition a strong flowing line and a clear sense of the land's direction.
Hemmed in by hills, the built-up area stretches along the valley floor. The result is a long, directional shape rather than a round city footprint.
Rail lines and large industrial sites leave straight, heavy marks on the map. Their long rectangles contrast with the smaller residential blocks around them.

Some people hang this map because of family history on the Korean peninsula, and others out of interest in places that are rarely seen. It is a restrained, factual portrait of a city known mostly by its outline.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, for example with the Korean name or a significant year. Pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the planned, industrial character of the streets.
