Taió lies in the Alto Vale do Itajaí, the upper valley of the Itajaí river system in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. The town grew along the Itajaí do Oeste river, and from above its streets curve with the water and the surrounding hills instead of following a strict grid. Farmland and forested slopes surround the urban area on all sides.
Like many towns in this part of Santa Catarina, Taió was settled largely by European immigrant families, and the region's small farms, churches and tidy houses reflect that heritage.
