Tarko-Sale is the administrative centre of the Purovsky District in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, just south of the Arctic Circle. It lies where the Pyakupur and Aivasedapur rivers meet to form the Pur, which then flows north towards the Kara Sea. On a map, water defines the town as much as streets do.
The built-up area is compact, a grid of blocks on higher ground by the rivers. Around it lies a landscape of taiga, bogs and countless small lakes, cut by winding channels and oxbows. Roads are few and direct, linking the town to the gas fields that support the regional economy.
