Taveta lies in southern Kenya, in Taita Taveta County, a few kilometres from the border with Tanzania. From above, the town is a small grid of streets around the main road that crosses to Holili on the Tanzanian side. Irrigated farmland and forest patches surround it. Kilimanjaro rises to the west, beyond the map, dominating the view from the ground.
Streams fed by springs from the mountain water the area, making Taveta greener than much of the surrounding plain. Lake Chala, a deep crater lake on the border, and the shallow Lake Jipe lie nearby. The area saw fighting during the First World War, including at Salaita Hill, during the East African campaign.
