Tergnier lies in the Aisne department of Hauts-de-France, in the flat valley of the Oise. It is above all a railway town. It grew as an important junction on the lines of northern France, and the map still shows this. Wide bands of track and railway yards cut across the town, and the streets are arranged around them.
The town was almost completely destroyed during the First World War, when the front passed through this part of Picardy. It was rebuilt in the years that followed, and much of its present layout dates from that reconstruction. Nearby, the Oise and the Saint-Quentin Canal add waterways to the rail lines.
