Úbeda stands on a long ridge in the province of Jaén, looking south over the Guadalquivir valley and an unbroken landscape of olive trees. From above, the old town is an irregular oval of narrow, winding streets, once enclosed by medieval walls. It is spaced with small plazas, churches and palace facades, and wider avenues and newer districts spread across the ridge beyond it.
In 2003 the Renaissance monumental ensembles of Úbeda and neighbouring Baeza were inscribed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Much of that legacy is linked to the architect Andrés de Vandelvira, whose work includes the Sacred Chapel of El Salvador on the Plaza Vázquez de Molina, one of the finest Renaissance squares in Spain.
