Vertentes lies in the Agreste of Pernambuco, the transitional zone between the humid coast and the dry sertão in northeastern Brazil. The town has a small, regular core of streets around its main square and church, with newer blocks added along the roads that lead out toward neighbouring towns.
The surrounding landscape is gently rolling, with farmland, pasture and small bodies of water scattered across it. Like many towns in the region, Vertentes is closely connected to its neighbours through roads that carry trade and daily travel, and its layout reflects that outward orientation.
