Vitré stands in eastern Brittany, close to the border with Normandy and Maine, on a rocky spur above the valley of the Vilaine. It was a frontier stronghold, and the plan still shows it: a compact old town inside a ring of ramparts, with the castle at the western point overlooking the river.
Inside the walls, narrow streets are lined with half-timbered houses, many built by merchants who grew rich in the cloth trade. The railway between Paris and Rennes runs just south of the old town. Nearby is the Château des Rochers, the home of the letter-writer Madame de Sévigné.
