Vrede is a farming town in the north-east of Free State, on the high grassland close to the Mpumalanga border. Its name is the Dutch word for peace. Like many Highveld towns, it was laid out on a straightforward grid, and from above the old centre shows as a tidy rectangle of streets and blocks with a church at its heart.
